Description
In 1907, Evelyn De Morgan achieved something no other female artist of the time did and held a solo exhibition of her art. Upon the invitation of J. J. Brownsword, the curator of Wolverhampton Art Gallery, she enthusiastically gathered together 26 of her favourite paintings and sent them to the city for a major retrospective.
This exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue full of the artist’s poems which helped the public understand her beautiful, mystical paintings. The press and public responded favourable, one reporter for the Wolverhampton Star describing her art as ‘painted dreams’.
To celebrate, the De Morgan Foundation has partnered with Wolverhampton Art Gallery to recreate this career-defining exhibition. In this online talk, Sarah Hardy, Director of the De Morgan Museum, will give a talk on the exhibition, its significance in De Morgan’s career, and her reaction to the exhibition.
The exhibition opens at Wolverhampton Art Gallery on 19th October 2024.
