An impressive display of William De Morgan ceramics, which document his career from the early Chelsea Period (1872 – 1882) through to his adventures in developing Moonlight lustre glazes is on long-term loan to the Ashmolean. Highlights in the display include De Morgan’s ruby lustre dish with a single peacock feather emblazoned across it, arguably his truest Aesthetic design, and the Persian rice dish, where fish twist and turn across the undulating surface of the piece, emphasising both form and surface decoration. The display welcomes visitors to the Ashmolean’s 19th century galleries which provide the perfect context for the wider art movements with which William De Morgan was associated.
