Evelyn De Morgan: The Gold Drawings
10th March 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
In this online lecture, Sarah Hardy, Director of the De Morgan Museum, will introduce a new exhibition opening on 11th March at Leighton House, London.
The talk and the exhibition focus exclusively on works on paper which De Morgan made between 1884 and 1902 in dazzling gold. She created her own art materials and meticulous application methods to create a series of drawings unlike any others from the period.
Gold was a colour of symbolic significance to the Spiritualist artist Evelyn De Morgan and this accounts for the subject matter of many of the drawings. However, these drawings, when studied closely, best demonstrate her close attention to detail and artistic skill in creating the illusion of depth and texture with a limited palette.
Sarah will discuss the drawings in chronological order and highlight those which were entered by De Morgan into an 1889 exhibition, before discussing the rationale behind the exhibition curation and production.
